Despite warnings that powerful Marines were guarding him, Jack refused to leave and prepared to attack the Marine ships. However, the news was unable to completely confirm his death. While sailing back to Zou with his fleet and his damaged ship, Jack read the newspaper that explained his supposed death before angrily shredding it.
